Coleman IK on the Jack's Fork River
Thanks for your reviews and honest opinions on the products you review. Let me state, I agree with you that this kayak is good for the right person in the right conditions.
I have used mine for three years and I am very pleased with it for many reasons.
1. The price is right. For the price of purchasing the model I have, I could not rent a canoe or kayak of any kind for more than just one day. If I were to purchase an outfitter quality IK it would cost me 10-15 times what I paid for what I have.
2. Quality - I disagree with you that this is a weak boat. I have taken this down approximately 20 miles of river, one rain swollen creek and two different lakes. I have drug bottom in the shallows, gone over downed trees, hit snags and intentionally ran it ashore with me in it on a gravel bar several times to make it easier to get out. To date, I have not damaged the skegs, nor punctured it in any way. I have got my money's worth even if it dies today.
3. Class II rapids - The main river that I run is a class I-II river. I have had absolutely no troubles. The rain swollen creek was a strong class II. I lost it once on the creek but that was my fault and not that of the kayak. Class IV rapids - as far as I know Coleman doesn't advertise this as a class IV quality boat.
4. I agree with you on the fishing point. I have tried and I was very uncomfortable with it.
5. Overnight trips - I haven't tried it yet but I plan on it. I also have a second Coleman IK that I have only tried on flat water but plan on taking it overnight on the river.
6. Resale value - Not much I am sure but there isn't much spent in the first place.
Overall, I am happy with it. I like it well enought that I have recommended it to many people who have seen me on it. I feel it was a very good buy.
