Inflatable Kayak Safety
Inflatable kayak safety and water safety are critical to enjoying this sport.
The fun ends when someone gets hurt. Follow these rules and guidelines to keep your water fun, fun.
Water Safety Rules and Guidelines
1. Always wear a PFD (Personal Flotation Device) aka life jacket. Most drownings occur in calm water to people who are not wearing a PFD.
2. Never boat alone. Little problems become big quickly when you boat alone. You should have another boat with you.
3. Floods kill. Stay off the river when it is flooding. The risk and dangers increase dramatically with floods. There is almost no margin for error.
4. Don't paddle under the influence.
5. Let someone know where you and your group are and when you should be back.
6. Select a trip that is appropriate for you and your group.
7. Don't dive into water unless you are absolutely sure it is deep enough and free of obstructions. Too many times a fun day on the water has turned into a life long disability.
8. Be aware of local weather. It many areas weather changes quickly. Monitor it and know what is possible.
9. Be aware of water levels. Tides, dam releases, local floods, high lake waves from a sudden wind can all occur on an otherwise beautiful day.
10. Take a paddling class from a qualified instructor.
