Sit-on-top Kayak
A sit-on-top kayak virtually eliminates the biggest fear for new kayakers. That fear is being trapped underwater and upside down in your kayak.
Most inflatable kayaks are sit-on-tops. Some sea and touring inflatable kayaks are decked (enclosed).
Sit-on-tops, particularly inflatables, require less skill to operate. Decked kayaks require more skill and generally can handle bigger water.
Near Shore & Sound
Sit-on-tops work great in sounds and near shore. Hard-shells are more common here, but inflatables also work good.
Recreational Use Calm Rivers and Lakes
Sit-on-tops work great for short trips on calm rivers and lakes. In this situation, you can choose between hard-shell and inflatable. Both work great. Look at the cost and advantages of both.
Whitewater
Inflatable kayaks rule the whitewater sit-on-top market. They work much better on whitewater then do hard-shell sit-on-tops.
Some Final Thoughts
Sit-on-tops are great for the casual boater. They are easy to operate and allow you to run a variety of water.
